Crash Team Racing was originally released in the middle of the original Playstation’s lifespan.

Competition is key for developers to push themselves and deliver bigger, cleverer and better games, and CTR had loads of different cartoon racers to race against. So is this game an M&M Racing? Or is it a Mario Kart 64? Well Crash Team Racing is a classic karting game, so let’s race to 1st place together...
Quote Crash Team Racing is the forth Crash game, so it includes characters from the Naughty Dog Era. Fan favourites like Crash, Coco, Cortex, Tiny and N.Tropy are here, with plenty more waiting to be unlocked. Each character has certain characteristics, with some having higher top speeds, acceleration or better handling. Depending on how skilled you are at racing, depends on which characters will be your preference.

All the tracks in CTR are all based off a particular character. This results in lots of varied environments, because of the wackyness of the characters in the Crash universe. Want some examples? How about a muddy drive around Tiny’s Arena? Or through the chemicals at N.Gin Labs? Would a tour around Cortex's Castle be better for you? The track designs are strong and memorable, with your favourite tracks will be how the track looks and sounds, rather than bad track design. Some tracks also have hazards which splices up the racing.

But you know what else spices up the racing? Gadgets and weapons! These are a double edged sword, which either help you to beat your opponents or protect your lead. So basically put the odds in your favour, or your worst nightmare! The weapons are well balanced, with none being overly powerful. (But some will certainly help players who might struggle.) These weapons are an absolute blast to use. Missiles, bowling bombs, TNT crates, Lab Beakers, clocks and shields. Sounds fun? It is!

One mistake that most kart racers make is the game as a whole sometimes feels like a bunch of tracks and cups, rather than feel like a fully-fleshed out game. Crash Team Racing addresses this with an adventure mode, effectively a proper 1-player experience.

It adds a lot of depth to an already large game, since there are Arcade, Time Trail, VS and Battle Modes before you get to Adventure mode. In this mode, you play through all the tracks with one character. Along with regular races, you also have new modes. These include CTR challenges, Relic Races, cups, Boss races and Crystal collecting arenas. All of this is located in a huge drivable hub, which you can explore as you win races and beat bosses.

The formentioned Battle Mode is a mutiplayer mode which offers something different to play. What do you get if you mix seven unique battle arenas, all weapons and gadgets (including exclusive invisibility and turbo engine gadgets) and crazy players? Huge fun and a big recommendation from me to get your mates round for brilliant mutiplayer mayhem.

Now onto CTR’s piece de la resistance: the handling. As I have hinted at, CTR has a layer of polish that you would expect from Naughty Dog. The handling of the karts is the most important part of this genre, which can make or break a game all in itself. I'll come straight out with it: CTR features the best handling karts I have ever played in any kart racer. The kart goes where you want it and with a great powersliding and boost system, it is easy to set some rapid times in Time Trail or in normal racing.

Crash Team Racing is the best kart racer ever created. There I said it. It has excellent kart handling, a full experience for both single players and groups of players, sounds great and looks fantastic. But the best part? It’s just fun. Don't believe me? Just buy the game either on disc or via the playstation store. You will not regret it.

My One Big Highlight
Spiderman While I don’t enjoy the music as much as the original trilogy, there is one track I do like. That is the theme played in the Adventure Hub. A cool feature is the theme plays throughout the different parts of the hub. But what makes it clever is it then changes gradually when you drive between them, with the instruments changing depending what area your entering.
Elephant In the Room
elephantOne way the game is showing its age a little now is the number of circuits. It has only 18 tracks, (and 6 battle arenas) which is less than the more modern racing games. For example, Sonic All Stars Transformed has 21 Tracks (plus mirrored), Mario Kart 8 has 32 Tracks (16 of which are recreated retro tracks) and Littlebigplanet Karting has 32 Tracks (plus user created tracks).

[Crash Team Racing]So, the four main racing games in the crash series. CTR is still my favourite, but I do quite like CNK. Don't forget CTTR, CBNK2 and CBNK3D! Lots of ayrnayms...
In the Crash Bandicoot series, Crash has had five 3D racing titles: Crash Team Racing, Crash Nitro Kart, Crash Tag Team Racing, Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D and Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2. I have played three of these and seen gameplay for Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2. So if I had to sort these tracks into cups, sorta like a greatest hits of my favourite tracks, what would I pick? Here goes…

Note: I have left Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D off this list, since that game borrows tracks from CTTR.

Closing Thoughts
As you can see, there is quite a mixture of tracks here. It would be great if there is a remake of Crash Team Racing in the future, to have custom cups like this from all the racing games in the past. Until that happens, this is the best we’ve got.
